The air compressor in a truck is a critical component of the air brake system and other pneumatic systems. Its main functions include:
1. Generating Compressed Air
The compressor pumps air from the atmosphere and compresses it to a high pressure (typically 90-120 psi / 6-8 bar).
This compressed air is stored in air tanks (reservoirs) for later use.
2. Supplying Air for Braking System
Primary Role: Powers the air brakes (used in heavy trucks and buses).
When the driver presses the brake pedal, compressed air is released to activate the brake chambers, forcing the brake shoes/drums or disc pads to engage.
Provides strong, consistent braking force, essential for heavy loads.
3. Supporting Auxiliary Pneumatic Systems
Suspension Control: Some trucks use air suspension, which relies on compressed air to adjust ride height and load leveling.
Clutch & Gearbox Assistance: In some models, air pressure assists in operating the clutch or gear shifting mechanisms.
Horn & Other Accessories: Powers the air horn, cab tilt systems, and other pneumatic devices.
4. Safety & Redundancy
Air compressors ensure continuous air supply, even if there’s a minor leak.
The system includes safety valves and driers to prevent overpressure and remove moisture, avoiding brake failure in cold conditions.
5. Automatic Regulation
A governor controls the compressor, turning it on/off based on air pressure to maintain optimal levels.
