How Brake Calipers Work (E-commerce Version)
1. Hydraulic Pressure Build-Up
When you press the brake pedal, hydraulic pressure forms in the brake fluid. This pressure travels straight to the brake caliper through the brake lines.
2. Piston Pushes Brake Pads
The hydraulic pressure pushes the caliper’s piston outward. The piston presses the inner brake pad against the brake disc. For floating calipers, hydraulic reaction force moves the caliper body in reverse, making the outer pad clamp the disc too.
3. Friction Stops the Car
The clamped pads create friction with the spinning brake disc. This friction turns the vehicle’s kinetic energy into heat, slowing or stopping the car quickly.
4. Brake Release & Reset
Let go of the brake pedal, and the hydraulic pressure drops right away. The piston slides back into place, and the brake pads pull away from the disc—braking is off.
